1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans.
Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection:
This artifact is a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis (SWOT) completed for the Instructional Technology Leadership course. I interviewed 8 teachers at our school and performed observations on an additional 9 to gather data for this analysis. In addition, I wrote and conducted a school wide technology use survey. Finally, I reviewed the previous years technology plan for the district. After this, I analyzed the data gathered and provided a thorough SWOT analysis of my school.
After completing this SWOT analysis, I am clearly able to facilitate the design and development of a technology-infused strategic plan because I have analyzed the needs of my school and the opportunities to meet those needs. I have since become part of the school’s newly formed technology team and we are in the process of implementing some of the strategic planning I completed in this SWOT analysis. We are providing teachers with professional learning, engaging teachers who are interested in technology through the technology team, and working on expanding our technology department’s reach through the creation of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) academy.
This artifact also clearly demonstrates my ability to facilitate the communication of a strategic plan through the use of an easy to read SWOT analysis table. This format is easy to understand and clearly communicates the basics of a plan to implement for my school. This SWOT analysis also shows my ability to evaluate a strategic plan because in essence a SWOT analysis is analyzing the current plan in action. I evaluated our current system and presented its strengths and weaknesses in this document.
Completing this artifact gave me a clear picture of the state of technology in my school. I rarely get the opportunity to venture outside of my own classroom and see how the entire school functions. This also gave me some great real world experience that I was able to bring to the table when the technology team was formed a few years later. If I could change one aspect about the creation of this artifact, it would be to choose the teachers I interviewed more carefully. I interviewed mainly within my department and a few others who I knew were interested in technology. I may have gotten a more representative sample if I had chosen randomly.
