2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences.
Artifact: Engaged Learning Project Report and Engaged Learning Project Sheet for Students with Rubric
Reflection:
This artifact is an Engaged Learning Project Report completed for the 21st Century Teaching and Learning course. This artifact required me to create an Engaged Learning project that taught and evaluated an entire unit in my course. This was a problem-based unit designed around creating a blueprint for a building using coordinate geometry while meeting real world expectations such as ADA compliance. The project made use of an online blueprint builder. Students were required to be in the lab for this assignment and had to be instructed in the use of the online blueprint builder. All standards for the unit are designed to fuel the creation of this blueprint.
This artifact demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in an authentic learning experience because I used an online tool to create a real-world based project that was learner-centered, problem based and involved higher order thinking skills. The authenticity of this project is based in its real world application. The students had to design a floor plan as if they were architects meeting the demands of a client. The digital tool provided the basis for the authentic learning and made the project accessible to all students. The problem was introduced and all instruction is tailored to meet the demands of the project. Students were engaged in high levels of thinking because they had to research requirements for ADA compliance and plan to implement those in their designs.
This artifact showed me how authentic learning and problem-based instruction can frame a unit. Students are more willing to pay attention to instruction if they know that they must use that information to complete a real world task. To improve on this artifact, I would collaborate with the architecture teacher at my school and have students complete their assignment using the technology available through her course.
