3.4 Adaptive and Assistive Technology
Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs.
Artifact: Article Analyses
Reflection:
This artifact is an Article Analysis created for the Educational Research course. For this artifact, I read an article about assistive technology and then analyzed the article for reliability, validity, limitations, and overall quality. I also reflected on the implications this article held for my classroom practice.
This artifact establishes my ability to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs through showing my research into the topic of computer assisted note-taking (CAN) and my suggestions for implementation into my classroom. After reading this article, I also began to think of what assistive technology could be used in my classroom. For example, one of my ESEP students this year has difficulty spelling certain phonemes. She typically used Siri on her iPhone 5 to figure out how to spell certain words. When her iPhone 5 got taken away from her as a punishment, I was able to suggest some other dictation apps that would work on her new phone to use as assistive technology. I also had a student who had difficulty writing but could type with no issues. However, in a math class, he occasionally needed help with his Alpha Smart to type the correct mathematical symbols. I facilitated this for him.
This artifact helped me to think about technology in a different way. For many students, technology is an added bonus, a fun way to learn a topic that could be taught in other methods. However, for some students with disabilities, technology can be a door opener to learning they could not have accessed in a traditional manner. I learned that technology is a great way to accommodate for certain disabilities. To improve on this artifact, I would do research on several assistive technologies instead of just CAN. This would provide a well-rounded view of my abilities to facilitate the use of assistive technologies.
